Pest Control in White Peach Scales

White peach scale, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona, is a significant pest under the family Diaspididae in the order Hemiptera. It was first documented by Targioni Tozzetti, an Italian entomologist, in 1886. This species poses a considerable threat to various plants, particularly fruit trees and ornamental plants, including peach, cherry, nectarine, and other stone fruits, as well as mulberry, willow, and various flowering shrubs. As sucking insects, they sap from host plants, leading to symptoms such as yellowing of leaves, dieback, reduced growth, and even the death of young plants. Additionally, the secretion of honeydew by these scales leads to the growth of sooty mold, which can further damage photosynthesis.
It is very difficult to control the white peach scales because adult females are shielded by a white-to-gray, waxy scale, about 2 to 3 mm in diameter, which blocks the penetration of active ingredients. Therefore, the systemic activity of the product is crucial. On the other hand, the smaller males undergo a mobile crawler stage before developing into winged adults that do not feed and live only to mate. So disrupting the mating process, such as killing the males, can effectively reduce the population of eggs.
To control the white peach scale, people usually prune infested branches and maintain plant health through adequate fertilization. Sometimes, natural enemies like parasitic wasps play a significant role in managing populations of scales. But effective control remains a persistent challenge.
Sunjoy Agro recommends using SAMFINA® (Spirotetramat 500 g/L SC) to control the white peach scales. The active ingredient, Spirotetramat, acts as an ACC inhibitor, interrupting lipid biosynthesis in the scales, leading to reduced molting, impaired reproduction, and ultimately, mortality. Besides, SAMFINA® has a Two-way systemic movement. Once applied, it will protect the whole plant with a relatively long-lasting control effect, lasting more than two weeks.
In May 2019, in a cherry orchard located in Liaoning Province, the branches of the cherry tree were infested with the peach white scale. Researchers from Sunjoy Agro treated the cherry trees with SAMFINA®, spraying it at a dilution ratio of 1:6000. Twenty-eight days later, the efficacy of the treatment was assessed, revealing that the bodies of the scales had shriveled. Upon scraping the scales off the trunk, no fluid was expelled from the bodies, confirming their death.
